The Agrias butterflies are some of the most fascinating butterflies in the whole world, let alone the Amazon. One of their greatest physical characteristics is their vibrant red bands on the front of the wings. Then, it’s almost like having two beautiful butterflies because the backside of the wings are phenomenally patterned. This is one of the most amazing creatures in Amazon, but you really have to be able to see both sides to fully appreciate how awesome this butterfly is.

The stunning butterfly can be found in Colombia, Bolivia and every country in between that runs along the Amazon Basin. All Agrias spend most of their times at the higher levels of the forest canopies. There are many different forms claimed to be true new forms to drive up the value. I do not doubt that this magnificent butterfly is not capable of having many forms, in fact, there have been several documented cases of hybrid Agrias with Preponas. There is even a taxon called the Prepona sarumani which is a Prepona praenestre and Agrias claudina hybrid, WHOA!

Where do butterflies get the name from? The Pieridae Butterfly Family

These framed butterflies of the Amazon belong to the White, sulfur and yellow butterfly family of Pieridaes.

It is this sub-family that is responsible for the name "butter-flies" because of their cream color.

The Pieridae species in this frame are: Phoebis trite, Aphrissa statira, Phoebis argante, Phoebis rurina, Phoebis philea

The B. Baeotus is a Neotropical ecozone species with a name so nice they have it twice. Their closely related cousin, the B. decalion, is similar except with an orange to brown stripe on the front.

Framed Butterfly Art Smyrna Blomfildia Barkwing Valentine's day gift

A great Valentine's day gift for him, this astonishing mounted butterfly is the Smyrna blomfildia. Smyrnas are amazing because of the patterns they have on their butterfly wings. The front is an orange, gold and brown fusion that expands up until the middle of the top wings. The backsides of the wings is what I would display forward, because of the wildly intricate animal print patterns on the back of their wings.

These are fearless butterflies, Smyrna's are cool with humans hanging around. They are usually found in large groups with Smyrna blomfildias and other butterflies near moist rock and dirt. Belonging to the Nymphalidae family, they are closely related to Colubra (dirces), and roost at night.

The Tiger Complex amongst different Butterflies of the World

The last article I posted about aposematism in certain colorful butterflies and the purpose behind their tiger like colors and patterns on neotropical butterflies. This time I'm going to go in a little further and discuss how the Tiger complex patterns works in Neotropical butterflies and why it is so important for their survival. 

The Tiger Complex is a group of tiger like patterned butterflies that are all part of a larger mimicry ring system. If you'd like to know how mimicry works, please refer to my articles:

Butterfly Mimicry among Heliconius Butterflies

There are about 200 known species that belong to this circle mostly unpalatable and the rest are clever copy cats. When birds view the coloration and patterns on the wings of these butterflies, they stay far away knowing that a bite into one of these tiger complex butterflies, they'd receive a very unpleasant surprise. Aposematically colored butterflies are unpalatable and toxic, having an extremely bitter taste.

The Tiger Complex can be found in many most Nymphalidae butterfly subfamilies such as, Papilionidaes, Ithomiinaes, Heliconius, Pieridaes and Rodinidaes. The example above is one of the largest examples of Tiger Complex butterflies, the beautiful Papilio zagreus butterfly.

Butterflies that belong to the Tiger Complex circles are known to come together in large groups, creating safe havens that a visual deterrants for other butterflies in the vicinity. Basically, strength and defense in numbers. These butterflies are known to show off their warning colors proudly, flaunting their "you can't mess with me" attitude.
