This is the very cool black and blue butterfly, the Napeocles jucunda, which also happens to be my favorite butterfly of all time. The wings look like a satin black spread along with a wing shape and pattern that resemble 2 penguins back to back getting ready for a duel.

A unique Mother's Day gift for Mom this is not your average collection of Morpho butterflies with a bunch of common species, this frame has some of the more uncommon species like the darker blue M. rhetenor cacica, helena, and the cisseis phanodemus.

All frames are hand crafted and the quality and characteristics are much better then the common, one-sided Riker Mounts. One of the great benefits of double pane glass framing is that you can see the front and back sides of the mounted butterflies. In most cases involving Neotropical butterflies the front and back sides of the wings are distinctly different. The back many times displays a species distinct form of self defense.

Every butterfly from Ben the Butterfly Guy comes from butterfly farms throughout the Eastern region of Peru. All butterflies here are classified non-endangered by the international CITES listings as reviewed by both the Ministry of Agriculture from Peru and U.S. Fish and Wildlife in the States. The Blue Morpho rhetenor butterflies are the true blue gems of the Neotropical Amazon Rainforest. They are the brightest of the blue morpho butterflies and are absolutely stunning. There are two sub species found under the Morpho rhetenor genus that are the Morpho rhetenor cacica and Morpho rhetenor helena. They was first described by Cramer in 1775.

What makes up their blue, iridescent shine is not the pigmentation of the scales on their wings, but rather the result of light diffraction where the light that hits the wings is altered upon reflection resulting in the brilliant blue hue we perceive with our eyes.
