The Blue Butterflies from Leafwings, Asteropes and Hamadryas

So the Polygrapha cyanea (first butterfly, Cyanea leafwing) is found in the Anaeini tribe like the butterfly to the right, of him the Memphis polyxo (Polyxo leafwing). The butterfly to the right of the Memphis is the Asterope leprieuri, also known as the Leprieur's glory. Then the last butterfly is the Hamadryas laodamia, or the Starry Night Cracker. They are called that because of the Cracking noises they make to scare off other male butterflies.

Real Framed Blue Morpho Butterflies for Mother's Day

Real Framed Blue Morpho Butterflies Mother's Day Gift

A unique Mother's Day gift for Mom this is not your average collection of Morpho butterflies with a bunch of common species, this frame has some of the more uncommon species like the darker blue M. rhetenor cacica, helena, and the cisseis phanodemus.

This piece is called "Morphos on the Attack" and is a stunning collection of blue butterflies are all from the Morpho butterfly family. The different patterns and hues on their blue butterfly wings are a result of a natural phenomena known as light diffraction.

In a sense, the blue morpho buttefly is blue for the same reason as the sky and the ocean where light is met by an obstacle in which not all waves of light can make it through the obstacle.

This is a piece from Ben the Butterfly Guy and has the following qualities:

≥ Each butterfly is spread entomologically and professionally preserved (we do not cut the wings and glue them back on, use fake antennaes or fake bodies)

≥ 19" x 30" Black finished, wood frame

≥ Our frames are not riker mounts nor shadow boxes, they are double-sided with crystal glass so you can see the front and backsides of each butterfly

≥ Each frame is tightly sealed with silicone

≥ Each order can be gift wrapped, include a message or detailed information on the butterflies you are purchasing.

≥ If you have a special request or idea please feel free to contact me

Framed Blue Morpho Butterfly Art Collection On the Attack in Black

All frames are hand crafted and the quality and characteristics are much better then the common, one-sided Riker Mounts. One of the great benefits of double pane glass framing is that you can see the front and back sides of the mounted butterflies. In most cases involving Neotropical butterflies the front and back sides of the wings are distinctly different. The back many times displays a species distinct form of self defense.

Every butterfly from Ben the Butterfly Guy comes from butterfly farms throughout the Eastern region of Peru. All butterflies here are classified non-endangered by the international CITES listings as reviewed by both the Ministry of Agriculture from Peru and U.S. Fish and Wildlife in the States. Copies of documentation and clearance are available upon request for your assurance and peace of mind.

A Real Mother's Day Gifts, Framed Blue Morpho Butterfly

Blue Morpho Butterfly Set, Morpho rhetenor cacica, helena and didius

This framed blue morpho butterfly is the famed Rhetenor cacica, known for his extra blue iridescence. Mounted in a black frame for those of you that are decorating your home and looking for something unique that will fit with your decor.

The Blue Morpho rhetenor butterflies are the true blue gems of the Neotropical Amazon Rainforest. They are the brightest of the blue morpho butterflies and are absolutely stunning. There are two sub species found under the Morpho rhetenor genus that are the Morpho rhetenor cacica and Morpho rhetenor helena. They was first described by Cramer in 1775.

What makes up their blue, iridescent shine is not the pigmentation of the scales on their wings, but rather the result of light diffraction where the light that hits the wings is altered upon reflection resulting in the brilliant blue hue we perceive with our eyes.

This is a piece from Ben the Butterfly Guy and has the following qualities:

≥ Each butterfly is spread entomologically and professionally preserved (we do not cut the
wings and glue them back on, use fake antennaes or fake bodies)

≥ 3" x 12" Black finished wood frame

≥ Our frames are not riker mounts nor shadow boxes, they are double-sided with crystal glass so you can see the front and backsides of each butterfly

≥ Each frame is tightly sealed with silicone

≥ Each order can be gift wrapped, include a message or detailed information on the
butterflies you are purchasing.

≥ If you have a special request or idea please feel free to contact me:

Mother's Day 2011 with Real Framed Glasswing Butterflies

Almost all the Glasswing butterflies you see hear belong to the Satyriinae family with the exception of the Chorinea species which belongs to the stunning Riodinidae family (also known as the metalmarks for the brilliant, metallic hues) and a couple Ithomiinaes. Satyriinae are characterized by thicker veins on the wings, solidarity, and staying away from bright lights. They are also associated with host plants from the Monocotyledons family. Monococotyledons are plants such as palms, bamboos, and orchids. Cithearias in particular are preferential to palms.

A unique idea for a Mother's Day Butterfly Gift

The Glasswing Butterflies in this particular piece are (see more info below image):

Real Framed Glasswing Butterfly Collection

Chorinea sylphina - This clearwing butterfly at first glance seems purely transparent in the open spaces of the wing patterns. However, when this butterfly is tilted to reflect light at different angles, you will find different hues of colors glimmering back. This butterfly, unlike most other larger Glasswings, belongs to the Riodinidae family of metalmarks.

Cithaerias merolina Male: The Male merolina can be found in dark damp rainforest and has a thinner body and notable pink on the lower wings. This beautiful butterfly belongs to the Satyridae family, which is an interesting family that includes butterflies that hire ants as personal bodyguards.

Haetera hypasia: This interesting looking Haetera is a cousin of the Piera and shares several characteristics. The patterns on this one are black, cube-like abstract. This is probably one of my favorites.

Godyris duilia (duillia) – This glasswing butterfly pertains to the Ithomiidae tribe, from the Nymphalidae family. As caterpillars they are fascinating, transparent little creatures that appear to be green because of the food that is traveling down their digestive track. Even the pupa is somewhat transparent, with the brown lines of their wings appearing darker and darker as they mature.

Haetera piera: The Haetera piera belongs to the Satyriinae family, and like the Cithaerias, is known to be found in dark damp places. Unlike the Cithaerrias they are known be found around bamboo plants as opposed to palms. They shun bright light, coming out around dusk and hanging out in the shadows and can be found in singles and pairs, hardly ever more then that.

*All frames are hand crafted and the quality and characteristics are much better then the common, one-sided Riker Mounts. One of the great benefits of double pane glass framing is that you can see the front and back sides of the mounted butterflies. In most cases involving Neotropical butterflies the front and back sides of the wings are distinctly different. The back many times displays a species distinct form of self defense.*

The Real Red and Blue Agrias Amydon Butterfly

Real Framed Agrias Butterfly Gift Mounted in Black Display

This is the intricately patterned Agrias amydon mounted and framed in a Black display. A great gift for a butterfly enthusiast to add to their collection. Also a great piece for home decorating.

The Agrias butterflies are some of the most fascinating butterflies in the whole world, let alone the Amazon. One of their greatest physical characteristics is their vibrant red bands on the front of the wings. Then, it’s almost like having two beautiful butterflies because the backside of the wings are phenomenally patterned. This is one of the most amazing creatures in Amazon, but you really have to be able to see both sides to fully appreciate how awesome this butterfly is.

The stunning butterfly can be found in Colombia, Bolivia and every country in between that runs along the Amazon Basin. All Agrias spend most of their times at the higher levels of the forest canopies. There are many different forms claimed to be true new forms to drive up the value. I do not doubt that this magnificent butterfly is not capable of having many forms, in fact, there have been several documented cases of hybrid Agrias with Preponas. There is even a taxon called the Prepona sarumani which is a Prepona praenestre and Agrias claudina hybrid, WHOA!
